Morning Pull: This Weekend’s Coverage

It is always an interesting experience to cover a frisbee tournament. For us, it’s like entering another world for a weekend. A world in which Ultimate is the national pastime, a Callahan is the country’s highest award and a place where our opinion on things actually matters. This weekend will, in all likelihood, be no exception.

We’re thrilled to be taking part in the Tally Classic and expect to see, in part, what the future of Ultimate is going to look like. We hope to bring you the deepest scope of that future here. This is our plan, which differs very slightly from how we covered CCC:

1. Round by round recaps of specific games, including tweeting point by point updates of those games. Specifically, we will be choosing one semifinal from the ACC South Championship and covering the final as well.

2. Since there is more time in between rounds at this tournament, we expect to be able to bring you round by round recaps of the scores of the Division I play.

3. For Twitter you can click here and you can also follow us on the hashtag #tc10. We started using the hashtag #tallyclassic2010 but realized how infuriating that would be to type every point. We’re still learning the ins and outs of this Twitter thing.

3. End of the day recaps, offering our opinion on how play went, what we liked, what we didn’t and any funny anecdotes from the day.

4. At some point next week we hope to have an interview with a couple of the observers from the weekend. Discussing how they felt about the rules and the players reactions. We will also get a few players’ perspective on all that.

That should about cover it, if you’d like to see anything else, leave a suggestion in the comments and we’ll do our best to satisfy everyone. After this weekend we will immediately begin our Easterns coverage. We have a lot of things that we are excited about coming up with this tournament so we hope you stick around for it.

Morning Pull: Ultimate Gets in Your System

This may become a regular feature or this may be the only time you see this (See our “Ultimate Flashback” series or “Tournament Bucket List“. We find ourselves constantly viewing the world through an Ultimate player’s eyes. Things are never quite the same for us as it is for everyone else (everyone else who doesn’t play Ultimate).

So, we’ll try and chronicle some of the things that happen to us in every day life that show Ultimate is a little bit more than just a hobby at this point.

  • We’re going to court this morning because of a traffic violation. All we could think about is the arbitration system and whether or not it’s better that self-arbitration. We have concluded that, outside of Ultimate, the world needs a little bit more than self-arbitration, or even IRS.
  • We have long since stopped counting to thirty when using mouthwash. We now stall ourselves to ten, three times.

Don’t forget to take the survey about coverage at CCC!

Morning Pull: Catering to You

We want you to be happy. It’s because of this, and because of the ambition of Taylor Nilan, that we’re bringing you this survey.

Fill out the survey and let us know what games you’d like us to cover each round at CCC LIII.

Morning Pull: TEP Medellin

In case you don’t read UCatch, check out TEP Medellin’s site and Facebook page.

Check out the tournament brochure (it’s in English!) for more information. This may be the biggest Ultimate event ever produced.

Georgia and UNC previews to come later today.

Morning Pull: Interesting Criticism

When we saw this video we could really only think of one thing and one person. This young man is the type of person who clearly has no room to be criticizing our boy Fitty. Nonetheless he continues to rail against him and, more for the spectacle than anything else, people watch and listen.

Anyone else see where we’re going with this?

Now, the Ulticritic has some good points and we don’t want to take that away from him by joining the masses of folks that simply mock him because of his, *ahem*, unconventional style. That being said, we find it interesting that he continues to piss into the wind on RSD.

Why doesn’t he do something about all the things he says? Why doesn’t he, at least like Frank Huguenard, create something new? If Ultimate is as hopeless as he says.

To be honest, we couldn’t really care less about whether or not Ultimate is ever on ESPN. We love to game to play the game. Perhaps this will change as we get older but for now, we don’t see any necessary changes. Sure, the game isn’t perfect, but baseball has been around for over 100 years and even after this postseason, the MLB still sees no reason to adopt instant replay.

Change takes time, but for now, we’re content to toss the disc with some of our best friends and have debates with other people about whether or not we were both vying for unoccupied space or if we were careening out of control into space already occupied.

Morning Pull: Brackets and Seedings

Being from Atlanta, we know better than to question the motives of one Stuart Downs. That being said, the RSD crowd has been a little bit upset about the lack of brackets and seedings thus far in the Club Regionals process, rightfully so, we might add. That being said, Mr. Downs has recently been a little bit upset about the manner in which the RSD crowd has expressed its upsetness.

Now, there’s no point in everyone trying to figure out what’s been going on in everyone else’s corner at this point. What matters is, we haveĀ brackets and seedings!

We think the tournament organizers got just about everything right. However, if one were to quickly refer to that same RSD thread that we linked you to earlier, you might find a particularly convincing argument for El Diablo to be seeded in front of GRIT. Against common opponents Diablo’s record is 2-2 while GRIT’s record is 0-2. Not to mention the way that GRIT backed into the second place finish at Texas Sectionals.

However, we have been alive for probably about the same amount of time that Stuart Downs has been tooling fools on the field. For that reason, we bow to his supremacy when it comes to seeding and apart from that the seedings may be more or less perfect. (Aside from FTS’ argument for a higher seed, but once again, we bow to older, wiser minds.)

Now, on to the important things. Games we plan on watching.

Obviously the most interesting games are going to come in the second and third rounds on Saturday in the championship bracket and then again in the first, second and third rounds on Sunday. We plan on making sure that we have full of most of those games, and round by round score updates for the whole tournament. You can attain those by following us on Twitter or taking a glance at the box to the side of your internet window.

We’re still looking for a photographer so don’t be surprised if we walk up to you on Saturday and ask for your pictures or if you want to take pictures for us, shoot us an e-mail. We promise it will be worth your while! (Our lawyer takes this opportunity to point out that we offer no compensation, monetary or otherwise, only our eternal gratitude and completely appropriate affection.)

We look forward to meeting captains that we have traded e-mails with and watching a weekend of Ultimate at one of its highest levels. Check back here for updates and the like!

See you in Atlanta!
